Week of May 11th-15th

MATH:
  • Review 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping
  • ID a slide, flip, and turn of various objects
  • Define the line of symmetry as the line that divides a shape into two congruent parts
  • ID cone, cube, cylinder, pyramid, rectangular prism, and sphere
  • ID and create symmetrical shapes

READING: Let's Go Rock Collecting by Monica Brown

  • Understand the meanings of multiple meaning words
  • Develop robust vocabulary meanings
  • Use details and prior knowledge (what you already know) to make inferences

READING VOCABULARY:

  • absolutely - If you absolutely have to do something, then you definitely have to do it.
  • collection - When you have a collection of something, then you have a group of things that are kept together.
  • common - If something is common, then there is a lot of it, or it happens often.
  • durable - If something is durable, then it will last a long time.
  • halfheartedly - If you do something halfheartedly, then you do it without much interest.
  • identify - If you identify something, then you figure out what it is.
  • last - Something that will last will be able to be used for a long time.
  • rare - If something is rare, then it is not found or seen very often.
  • separated - If you separated things, then you sorted them into groups.
  • settled - If something settled, then it moved slowly until it came to rest.

LANGUAGE:

  • Helping verbs are verbs that help the main verb tell about the past
  • Have, has, & had are helping verbs.
  • Example: I have been sick. (Have is the helping verb and been is the main verb.)

SPELLING:

  • Test Friday.

SCIENCE:

  • ID rocks as natural resources that people use.
  • Collect and classify rocks, soil, and plants.
  • Describe different bodies of water.
  • Recognize that living things need water to live and grow.

REMINDERS:

  • Book orders are due FRIDAY, May 15!
  • Remember to bring your DOLLAR for the FIELD TRIP FRIDAY. We will be going to the park after we visit Head Start.

Week of May 4th-8th

MATH:

  • Recognize & name trapezoids, parallelograms, & hexagons
  • Define congruent as describing two shapes that have the same size & shape
  • ID a slide, flip, & turn of various objects
  • Define the line of symmetry as the line that divides a shape into two congruent parts
  • ID & create symmetrical shapes
  • QUIZ FRIDAY

READING: My Name is Gabriela by Monica Brown

  • ID cause & effect in a story. Clue words may be in sentences to help you.
  • cause = the reason something happens (Clue words are since & because)
  • effect = what happens (Clue word is so)
  • Understand the characteristics of a fiction (false; made-up) story
  • ID antonyms as words that have opposite meanings

READING VOCABULARY...

  • aspire = to try very hard
  • accolade = special award or praise for something
  • award = prize
  • beyond = farther away
  • create = use your imagination to make something new
  • grand = something that is important and wonderful
  • literature = stories and poems
  • native = from a certain place, like where you were born
  • noticed = observe something very carefully

LANGUAGE:

  • Recognize & use present tense (come, run, go, do, see, give)
  • Recognize & use past tense (came, ran, gone, did, saw, gave)
  • QUIZ FRIDAY

SPELLING:

  • TEST FRIDAY

SCIENCE:

  • Define adaptation & the types of adaptation
  • ID how plants & animals help each other in an ecosystem
  • Define & construct a food chain
  • Define endangered animals
  • Study Guide goes home Tuesday (today)

REMINDER:

  • Book orders are due on Friday 5/15/09, so we will receive them before summer break!
